Matthew is the Ecology Education Officer at Holland Park Ecology Centre, a base for environmental education which utilises the woodland enclosures of this beautiful west London park.
He has been working in environmental education for over 13 years, with time spent at an outdoor education centre on the north Norfolk coast, a job with the Youth and School team in Lee Valley Park and has been at Holland Park for more than 10 years. His first taste of a career in outdoor education was back in the early 90s as a 15 year old work experience placement at the London Wildlife Trust’s Centre for Wildlife Gardening in Peckham.
Matthew enjoys sharing his passion for the natural world with a range of audiences, from pre-schoolers to third agers, and believes that hands on experiences are the best way to connect people with nature. The majority of his work is with 4-10 year olds; running outdoor education and Forest School sessions for school groups and wide ranging nature themed holiday activities. With a background in animal ecology, behaviour and conservation, he is now proud to be a professional pond dipper and mini-beast hunter.
Matthew was awarded his LEEF fellowship on 1 June 2015.
Matthew has chosen to share a selection of wildlife id sheets with LEEF members. Please note that while he and Holland Park Ecology Centre are happy for these sheets to be downloaded and used in their entirety they do not want individual images from the guides to be copied and used separately. The security settings of the documents reflect this preference and you will be asked for a password if you try to complete an unauthorised action.
